How to Become a Visiting Artist

MCM Visiting Artist/Artist in Residence Program

The Mississippi Children’s Museum (MCM) provides a unique and exciting education experience that ignites and inspires a thirst for discovery, knowledge, and learning in all children. Mississippi Children’s Museum is a place where children can discover for themselves a sense of place: that dynamic connection between where they live and the heritage and cultural traditions that are uniquely Mississippi. The Express Yourself Gallery provides an environment in which children and adults can express themselves freely in both visual and performing arts.

Program Overview

MCM Visiting Artist/Artist in Residence Program will directly link children and their self-directed exploration and practice of the arts with a wide range of arts experiences and artists from the state and beyond. The program will provide opportunities for children to create and view art and performances, as well as participate in material explorations while investigating a variety of authentic art tools, techniques and processes in a dedicated studio space.  The artist will have the opportunity to engage actively with a high volume of museum visitors and share his creative process with the public.

In a Visiting Artist workshop, children ages 5-12 who are accompanied by a caregiver will experience an open-ended process that will accommodate a variety of ages and artistic capabilities. Workshops will last approximately 30 minutes.  All workshops are free with paid admission; tickets are available 15 minutes before each workshop begins on a first come/first served basis.

Artist applicants may come from various art fields: painter, illustrator, sculptor, multi-media, performance art, etc. The museum considers artists with the following criteria in mind:  level of experience and interest in working with children of all ages; technical skill; overall professional quality and aesthetic of work; strength and reputation of the artist’s work; wide range of media represented among the artists selected.
